Default Home Sweet Home?-Let's Play Sweet Home!



Sweet Home is a classic horror game released in 1989 by Capcom, often being cited as being an influence of Resident Evil, though reported to not be a prequel. The game was licensed from a movie by the same name that was released the same year (You'll find some pretty gory stuff on YouTube if you search for it). It's an interesting blend between RPG and Survival Horror, two genres that normally don't mix. I'll add my own creativity to the game as we play through it to make my play through more unique. The game is pretty creepy and has some mature themes for a NES game, clearly explaining why it never came to the United States until a fan-translation was created.

This LP is purely fictional, any similarities to real life people is merely a coincidence.

Meet the Cast





Ability: lighting things on fire, seems almost ironic


Ability: healing the wounded


Ability: taking photographs that make pictures come to life


Ability: vacuuming floors


Ability: opening locked doors

Premise:


Talking Tyrants are in search of valuable frescoes, that can only be found in an abandoned mansion. Tomm brings a lighter, Brick brings his first aid kit, Parish brings his camera, Rei brings his portable vacuum, and Nadia brings an all-purpose key. Together they're an unstable force that will save humanity, err, themselves, or something like that.

Having plenty of experience tard-harshin', Tyrants are ready for whatever is headed they're way inside this mansion. Maybe some lead paint? An empty fridge? Chocolate-covered bacon? If only they were so lucky.

I know, I suck for not pulling through with this LP (especially considering I already played through the entire game and had it capped and ready to go when I started this LP).

Forget the why, I've decided to kick my butt back in gear and start from the very next post. Let's get started where we left off, the beginning:

Guests never seem to close doors on their own. No wonder ghosts do it for them.

yay! I was hoping to see this LP resume someday. I tried to play this game a couple of times but never got the hang of it.

Glad to see you guys are still interested!

Sweet Home runs off of a buddy system. You can make two teams, one with two people and one with three. Both teams can switched of instantly, and if you get stuck in battle you can call the other one and try to have them help you during a fight as well.





Rei and Tomm make up my first team.



Tomm offers some advice. Who wanders a haunted house alone? People who want to die.



We enter our first room and I remember the frescoes need a photographer and call Parish over to do his thing.



We examine our first fresco and boy is it ugly! It almost looks like it belongs in our unclean fanart thread.


Let's take a picture, so we can remember this great memory for years to come and...


A hidden message appears in the fresco. Where can I make one of these?



Brick and Nadia team up now that I've handled the first fresco.



Nadia pops our her key just as we reach our first locked door.


The door starts opening and...


Chucky's girlfriend appears?!

I just noticed the frescoes appear to be painted with two distinct shades of human fecal matter.

Okay time for an update.





In this room we first encounter spirits, which have the ability to take away a party member they hit and transport the party member anywhere around the mansion. Don't look away or you might just end up with only one person in your party left to fight monsters.




An evil doll appears, but our heroes quickly beat it into submission and continue on.


We come across a skeleton just, you know, lying around.


See guys, love is the answer.

We enter a dark hallway and Tomm lights the way with his fire.





We pick up a few items and are encountered by...




But he's no match for our five members.



We make our way back to the main lobby.





Tomm's always giving us good advice.

Which comes in handy when the wood collapses under Brick's feet and he is barely saved by Nadia.

You are correct. Sweet Home is pretty much an RPG survival horror game. Not a super huge genre, but interesting, especially this early on.

So how do the battles play out? I don't think we need a play-by-play for all of them, but it is pretty simple or is there some depth?

And what does Pray do?

It's pretty simple actually.

The commands are similar to any turn-based RPG. Pray basically is your lifeline, it does a random amount of damage, sometimes huge amounts that will wipe out an enemy but you only have a certain amount of Pray Points like MP I guess since there is no magic in this game.

Also sometimes when you are walking through the house random objects will be thrown at you by ghosts and you can either try to duck, jump to a side, or pray. Sometimes praying saves you.

Besides that you just attack and then enemy attacks back, it's no different from any other turn-based RPG. One thing you can do, is call on the other party to come and assist your party and the game will give you a few seconds to get the other party to meet the first one.

Huh, now that's an interesting mechanic I don't think I've ever seen before. It sounds almost like what the *enemies* can do to you in Etrian Odyssey, only you get to do it to them. Spiffy.
