Default Changes to Wii Sports (and other games)

I have a launch Wii, and of course played a ton of Wii Sports. A friend of mine got a Wii for Christmas, and last night I was over and we were playing a bit, when I was surprised to notice subtle changes in the game. Particularly Baseball, they added a lineup intro at the start of the game, and your players actually throw the ball to first on a ground out (instead of just sitting there holding the ball for the mystery out). I also noticed that they added the Wii Remote condom jacket to the warning screen.

I didn't get a chance to really explore the differences, but I thought it was really interesting that Nintendo has updated the game. I guess this sort of thing probably happens a lot, but mostly when something is ported. This is the first time I've noticed the same game on the same system. Have I missed any big ones?

Me too, yet I still play it constantly. Where does the fault lie there?

I think us longtime MK fans are suffering from battered-gamers syndrome... or maybe it's Stockholm syndrome.

So.

Does anyone have any information regarding the actual, you know, thread topic?

Closest I can think of is Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold, honestly. I can't think of any other games that were secretly redeveloped like that...

Yes. There were three different versions of Super Mario RPG, and IIRC there was a revised version of FFVI (er, III) released to fix the Relm Sketch Bug.

A2G was just a localized version of Zero 2 Alpha, which saw a proper arcade release in Japan.

I recall hearing that there were slight changes made to certain PS1 games after they became Greatest Hits.

What these games are, and what the changes were, I cannot recall, but I DO remember hearing it somewhere!

Wait, just remembered-

Ocarina of Time went through at least two versions because:

1. Muslim chanting connected to the fire temple

2. At the end (spoilers for a 11 year old game!) Ganon coughs up red blood. This was changed to green I believe.

Apart from that, not much.

I've never understood why red blood is so bad but any other color is kosher.

I remember the PC version of House of the Dead let you swap the color of blood to anything you like. I don't think it affected the blood that appeared when you took damage, just the monsters, though.

Nothing like blowing up zombies full of mustard.

There was a revised version of GTA San Andreas that removed the Hot Coffee thing. I only found out because I tried to sell my copy, and Gamestop wouldn't accept it because it was one of the originals.

They changed the Gerudo symbol too....

Metroid Prime had loads of changes and revisions. There are videos on the site and lots more than just the page that loads initially. Most of them are to stop sequence skipping, which is the secret best bit of Metroid anyway.

I think Resident Evil 4 had bits tweaked for the PAL release as well, but I can't remember what they are.

EDIT: Super Metroid was tweaked on the PAL release to make up for the 17% speed difference (Samus' motion was sped up). I believe the new physics can be abused in strange ways as a result.

I've never understood why sequence breaking offends Nintendo so much either.

The whole of Zero Mission suggests it doesn't. Just Retro, it seems.

That's weird. My copy of Mario Kart Wii is probably the best of the series. You should take yours back for a non-defective copy.

Does anyone remember the fighting game that made all of the blood white? That was a terrible decision for reasons that my inner 15 year old thinks is hilarious.

It was MK? I thought it was an obscure MK knock off, not the actual game itself. Huh. That's insane.

The change to Mario Kart Wii would be just setting the default item setting to "Strategic." 90% of problems are solved by doing that.

(The other 10% would be just erasing battle mode altogether.)
