Media | A2Q Archives | A2Q #52: The "Explod" Edition | August 19, 2008: Welcome to this week's home video release highlights, a column tragically focused entirely on the American market. Sorry, rest of the world. Region locks are the home video industry's way of saying they still don't understand the Internet.

Dexter: Season Two A serialized (serial?) crime drama on premium cable channel Showtime, Dexter follows a blood-splatter expert as he tries to balance his work life with having a normal relationship and relating to his sister, a fellow police person like their father. Oh, and he's a serial killer who only preys on criminals because his adopted father drilled it into him to do so. In Season One, his main nemesis was another serial killer who had discovered his secret double life; in Season Two he has to scramble to evade detection after the police find his body dumping ground under the ocean's waves. Unlike the first season, which closely followed the novel that inspired the series, Season Two tells its own unique story, and is stronger for it.

Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Man, I'm so far out of the demographic for this that Hannah Montana might as well be from another planet for how much sense she makes to me.

House: Season Four You'd think they would have run out of obscure diseases by now. I've never actually seen the show, just its hyperbolic commercials, but I"m sure plenty of you are excited to revisit Dr. House and his unconventional methodologies in dealing with the affliction du jour.

Justice League Stuff like this only serves to remind me that Batman comes from the same universe as Mr. Mxyzptlk, and I have even more admiration for what Christopher Nolan has accomplished with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

The Life Before Her Eyes This is one of those movies whose entire run-time is devoted to setting up the big twist at the end. This film takes place in two portions of a woman's life. We see her at school, and later on as an adult wracked with guilt, and we wait and wait for the end to tell us how she went from being her innocent younger self to her unhappy adulthood. Then we find out, and we yawn. M. Night is bad enough; a pale imitation is too much to be borne.

Prom Night What, they ran out of generic Asian horror movies to remake, now they're scraping the bottom of the barrel of '80s slasher movies?

The Proposition (2005) You probably missed this atmospheric western set in the lawless days of Australia's past when it was first released on DVD, but you shouldn't have. It got a lot of press for being written by Nick Cave (a popular musician, as in "Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds") but it should have been touted for its excellent transposition of the American western to Australia. Long, slow scenes build tension and then erupt in sudden and incredible violence.

Street Kings I love James Ellroy, the novelist behind such seminal crime novels as LA Confidential and The Black Dahlia. And like Dark Blue, Street Kings is a story written by him specifically for the screen and directed by the guy behind Training Day. At press time I haven't yet seen it, but from what my moles have told me this isn't nearly as good as you might hope. Supposedly, it treads territory well-worn (and done better) by The Shield, and Keanu Reeves just isn't as good as the rogue cop as Denzel Washington in Training Day, Kurt Russell in Dark Blue or Russel Crow in L.A. Confidential. Still, Ellroy's L.A. is a place I've spent a lot of time in novels and films, so I'm always ready to take another trip.

Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles: Season One I watched the first few episodes when they were broadcast, and I was very underwhelmed, despite the addition of Firefly''s River Tam as the female Terminator. However, I've heard that the show really hit its stride later in it's run: A perfect excuse to Netflix it and give it another shot.
